Is the calculator free, and do I need an account?

It is free and there is no account or sign-up. You can use it without cookies; if you agree to the functional cookie, we can remember you and keep your previous results.

What does CO2e mean?

CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) expresses all greenhouse gases, such as methane and nitrous oxide, as the amount of CO2 that would warm the planet by the same amount over 100 years, using the IPCC AR5 conversion values. Results are shown in tonnes of CO2e per year.

What is a good or average footprint?

It depends on the country. Your results page compares you with your country's average consumption-based footprint per person (from Our World in Data) and with the 1.5 °C lifestyle target of about 2.5 tonnes per person by 2030 (IGES, 2019). Scopes differ, so treat comparisons as context rather than a score.

How accurate is the estimate?

Skipped questions are filled in from national statistics and shown as estimates with a range. The accuracy meter tells you what share of your total comes from values you entered or confirmed, and it rises when you add real bills, distances and flights.

Where do the emission factors come from?

From published, cited tables: UK DESNZ/DEFRA 2026 conversion factors, US EPA Emission Factors Hub 2025 and eGRID, Ember grid intensities, FAO and Poore & Nemecek for food, and World Bank and Eurostat statistics. Every line in your results names its source row.

How are flights counted?

By great-circle distance between airports, cabin class and the DESNZ flight factors, which include the extra warming of non-CO2 effects at altitude (radiative forcing) by default. You can switch flight method and radiative forcing in Method settings.

How is the whole household counted?

You enter the household's totals once, and the per-person figure divides the total equally by default. An OECD-modified split, which weights children less, is available in Method settings.

What are the biggest ways to cut emissions?

It depends on your results. The calculator re-runs its engine with changes such as switching to an electric car, driving less, flying less, a plant-rich diet or a heat pump, and ranks them by tonnes saved for your household.

Is my data stored?

Only with your permission. Without cookies, nothing is saved on our servers. With the functional cookie, your answers and results are stored so you can return, and you can delete them at any time. Bills you upload are read on your own device and are never uploaded.

Does carbon offsetting cancel my footprint?

No. Reduce first, and only then consider certified credits for what remains. Our footprint certificate records your footprint; it is not a carbon offset or a carbon-neutral certification.
